Striking port workers get support from Teamsters, UAW, and other unions
Oct. 1, 2024 | The roughly 45,000 longshoremen on strike across more than a dozen major U.S. ports are getting kudos and the rare sympathy strike from fellow labor unions. The ILA, in a statement Tuesday, blasted the “greedy” employers unwilling to meet its demands. “These companies... they don’t give a f—k about us,” ILA President Harold Daggett told members Tuesday in a video published by the union. “Well, we’re gonna show them they’re gonna have to give a f—k about us. Because nothing’s gonna move without us.” “The U.S. government should stay the f—k out of this fight and allow union workers to withhold their labor for the wages and benefits they have earned,” Teamsters General President Sean O’Brien said in a statement Monday.
US Foods members ratify a new three-year contract
Oct. 9, 2024 | Local 355 drivers at US Foods in Manassas, VA ratified by more than a 2 to 1 margin a new collective bargaining agreement. The contract has a three-year term. The deal includes substantial annual wage increases, maintains Health & Welfare benefits, provides new language on key safety issues, calls for the Union’s participation in safety committees, and adds stronger strike language, drafted and approved by the national Union. Local 355 represents more than 100 US Foods van and CDL drivers.

Shop stewards take a breath, and a break

Besides doing their own jobs, they're on the look out to make sure the company is held accountable when something goes awry. In recognition of their hard work, every two years the Local Union Executive Board sponsors an evening when stewards and their guests can kick back, relax, mingle, share stories, and enjoy a great meal and good music. Owner, operator of ship that struck Key Bridge to pay $100M settlement
Oct. 24, 2024 | The owner and manager of the cargo ship that caused the Key Bridge collapse [in March 2024] have agreed to pay more than $100 million to settle a lawsuit brought by the U.S. Justice Department. The settlement comes a month after the Justice Department sued Dali owner Grace Ocean Private Ltd. and manager Synergy Marine Group, both of Singapore, seeking to recover more than $100 million that the government spent to clear the underwater debris and reopen the city’s port.
