Today in 1942
A constitutional amendment declaring that “Congress shall have power to limit, regulate, and prohibit the labor of persons under 18 years of age” was approved by the Senate today, following the lead of the House five weeks earlier. But only 28 state legislatures ever ratified the amendment – the last three in 1937 – so it has never taken effect.

Drivers at Mid-Atlantic Baking approved in January a new contract that provides a 12% wage increase over the four-year term. Other gains include an increase in the company contribution to the 401(k) plans; additional paid time off for all members under the sick leave policy updated to comply with Maryland law; and improvements to company safety policies.

Negotiations for four new contracts are underway at Anne Arundel County on behalf of fire battalion chiefs, correction program specialists, deputy sheriffs, and park rangers.

Contract talks are ongoing at KraftHeinz, for pressmen and drivers at The Baltimore Sun; Holly Poultry; YRC Freight, USF Holland New Penn; and newly-organized service agents at DHL.

In organizing news, drivers at Arnold Packaging in Baltimore and graphic artists at Hood Printing in Randallstown recently voted to join Teamsters Local 355. A first contract was quickly achieved at Hood Printing that reflects the Teamster standard for wages, benefits, and grievance procedure. Negotiations for a first contract continue at Arnold Packaging.
