Today in 1959

Half-million steelworkers began what is to become a 116-day strike that shutters nearly every steel mill in the country. The strike occurred over management's demand that the union give up a contract clause which limited management's ability to change the number of workers assigned to a task or to introduce new work rules or machinery which would result in reduced hours or numbers of employees. The strike's affects persuaded President Eisenhower to invoke the back-to-work provision of the Taft-Hartley Act. The union sued to have the Act declared unconstitutional, but the Supreme Court upheld the law. The union eventually retained the contract clause and won minimal wage increases. The strike led to significant importation of foreign steel for the first time in U.S. history, which replaced the domestic steel industry in the long run.

Labor Unions Are Good for Workers. Here’s Why They Also Make Good Business Sense
Posted On: Sep 12, 2023
Sept. 12, 2023 | OPINION | Call it the afterglow from a hot labor summer, but a key indicator of U.S. public support for unions recently notched a record high, with six in 10 Americans saying unions are good for the U.S. economy. Nearly the same number agreed a unionized workforce is helpful — not harmful — to their company’s success. As a labor economist, I know that the public is onto something — and that the rise in U.S. labor activism and union formation is not an automatic threat to business interests and economic stability. Evidence shows that unionized workplaces are more productive and have a more stable workforce. Evidence also suggests labor unions can help correct market failures, reverse decades of income inequality, and support economic growth -– all forces that make the economy work better in ways that ultimately help business’s bottom line.
