July/August 2018 Newsletter

Brothers and Sisters:

Happy belated Independence Day!

Then there are these other days of interest in July: We have Nat'l Ice Cream Day, Nat'l Hot Dog Day, Nat'l Tequila Day, Nat'l Lasagna Day and then Nat'l Cheesecake Day.

In August we have many small events, but my favorite is on Friday, August 3: It's International Beer Day. Cheers!

Bowling this year starts on August 29. Please be there by 9:30 a.m. for a short meeting. We can always use new bowlers. If you don’t want to be on a team, then just come in as a sub.

We will be having a speaker at our July 19th meeting. A spokesperson from Dominion National will be discussing their vision and dental plans. Remember, the Union and ARM are not endorsing the program. This is for informational purposes only.

We need adult beverages for the wheelbarrow of cheer. Don't forget to purchase 3-2-1 tickets.

I first posted this recipe in the newsletter in 2014. Being that it is now summer and hot, I thought that you would enjoy a cold Spanish soup that I first tried in 1972 in Greenwich Village NY. The funny thing about this recipe is I don't like tomato juice and I don't like cukes. But I love this:

Gazpacho
Gazpacho is a spicy cold Spanish soup with fresh chopped tomatoes, bell pepper, fresh herbs and hot sauce. If you like cold soups during warm summer evenings, this chilled vegan gazpacho won't disappoint.

Ingredients:

• 3 cups tomato or vegetable juice
• 1 onion, diced
• 3 tomatoes, chopped
• 1 bell pepper, any color, diced
• 2 cloves garlic, minced
• 1 cucumber, diced
• 2 tbsp lemon juice
• 2 tbsp red wine vinegar
• 1 tsp tarragon
• 1 tsp chopped fresh basil
• 1/4 tsp cumin
• 1/4 tsp cayenne pepper, or to taste
• 1/4 - 1/2 tsp hot sauce, to taste
• 2 tbsp olive oil

Prep: Mix together all ingredients well. Place half of the mixture in a blender or food processor and process until smooth. Recombine. Chill thoroughly before serving.

Another cold soup that I like is Vichyssoise - which is a fancy name for cold potato and leek soup.

The hall for our parties is the UAW Hall at 1010 South Oldham Street. It's near the corner of South Oldham Street and O’Donnell Street, right behind the BP station. The hall is right off the Boston Street exit of Route 95 (new tunnel) and the O’Donnell Street exit of Route 895 (old tunnel).

The summer party will be held on August 16th. There are some changes that have been made: (1) The hours for the parties are now 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. (instead of noon to 4 p.m.), and (2) NO ONE will be allowed in the hall until 20 minutes prior to the start of the party. Start getting your envelopes in. Remember that your check is for $25 if for one person and $50 for 2 people. We will hold your check if you want us to and give it back to you at the Christmas Party. They have to be received by August 6. There will be a money wheel. We need volunteers for the wheel and to sell 50/50’s. Remember to purchase some of the 3-2-1 and basket of cheer tickets. NO CAKES are needed for this party.

New Members: None
Sick members: James Jones, Tyrone Howard, John McMillon, Ernest Boritz, Perry Conway, Jesse R. Taylor, Emanuel Brown, Maurice Crosby, Willie Webb, Ernie Shipley, Ron Motz, Gary Rausch, Norman Scott and George Booker.

The next meeting will be on July 19, in the Sullivan Hall at Teamsters Local 355, 1030 S. Dukeland St., Baltimore, MD. Remember, there will be no meeting in August due to the summer party. Coffee and donuts are served at 9:30 a.m., the Executive Board meets at 10 a.m., and the general meeting begins at 11 a.m. A light lunch is served following the general meeting. Hope to see you there. Remember to bring another retiree with you.

Fraternally,
Bob Eney
President
