Today in 1902 President Theodore Roosevelt established a fact-finding commission to suspend a nine-month-long strike by Western Pennsylvania coal miners fighting for higher pay, shorter workdays, and union recognition. While the miners won better pay and reduced hours, they did not secure official union recognition; it marked the first time the federal government intervened as a neutral arbitrator in a labor dispute.
