Today in 1949
The historic Great Hawaiian Dock Strike—a massive six-month struggle by dockworkers to win wage parity with mainland U.S. dockworkers—concluded. The ILWU won a compromise settlement providing a 21-cent total wage increase (14 cents immediately, with 7 cents deferred), cementing the power of inter-racial, multi-ethnic union solidarity and transforming Hawaii's labor and political landscape.
