On This Day in 2004
A player lockout by the National Hockey League began, leading to the cancellation of what would have been the league’s 88th season. It was the first time the Stanley Cup was not awarded since 1919, and the first time a major professional sports league in North America canceled a complete season because of a labor dispute. The lockout, over owner demands that salaries be capped, lasted 310 days..
