Today in 1886
The New York Times declares the struggle for an eight-hour workday to be “un-American” and calls public demonstrations for the shorter hours “Labor disturbances brought about by foreigners.” Other publications declare that an eight-hour workday would bring about “loafing and gambling, rioting, debauchery and drunkenness.”

Just this: may all souls be comforted
in ways that matter to each soul.
May the days be eased by beauty and remembering better times.
May the Autumn light be beautiful to look at.
May we be sad with those who are sad.
May be be glad with those who find a bit of gladness
May we not relive, but remember
the goodness of the good souls...
