Today in Labor History
Oct. 20, 1980:  Presidential candidate Ronald Reagan writes to PATCO President Robert Poli with this promise: if the union endorses Reagan, "I will take whatever steps are necessary to provide our air traffic controllers with the most modern equipment available and to adjust staff levels and work days so that they are commensurate with achieving a maximum degree of public safety." He got the endorsement. Nine months after the election, he fires the air traffic controllers for engaging in an illegal walkout over staffing levels and working conditions.

Labor Delivered, But What Will It Get In Return?
Updated On: Nov 12, 2012

Nov. 9, 2012 | This past Election Day, labor unions achieved some impressive accomplishments. In addition to helping to re-elect President Obama, they also provided crucial support for victorious candidates and scored major successes in ballot initiatives throughout the country. As The Nation's Josh Eidelson has pointed out, the results of labor's efforts in the 2008 election have been mixed: "The president passed labor-backed healthcare and banking reforms, but barely offered lip service to the anti-union-busting Employee Free Choice Act…" So what will labor ask for this time around, and what can it expect? Full story here.
