The New York Times declares the struggle for an eight-hour workday to be “un-American” and calls public demonstrations for the shorter hours “Labor disturbances brought about by foreigners.” Other publications declare that an eight-hour workday would bring about “loafing and gambling, rioting, debauchery and drunkenness.”

Retirement Experts, Advocates Urge Md. Delegates to Support HB 1318

Mar. 18, 2013 | SOCIAL SAFETY NETS | Retirement policy experts and advocates urged members of the Maryland House Economics Matters Committee to move forward with a bill that would help prevent the poverty that threatens millions of Maryland workers as they retire. HB1318, sponsored by Del. Tom Hucker (D-Silver Spring), would create the Maryland Secure Choice Retirement Savings Program for private sector workers who lack access to an employer-sponsored retirement plan…A public opinion research report released [recently] by the National Institute on Retirement Security found overwhelming support for expanding access to retirement savings through a plan similar to that proposed by Hucker.
