The Faster Labor Contracts Act Should Be the Starting Point for Labor Reform

 July 8, 2026 | U.S. LABOR | Last month, the U.S. House of Representatives passed the Faster Labor Contracts Act (FLCA), which would require contract negotiations with new unions to go to arbitration if an agreement cannot be reached within 90 days. The bill’s bipartisan passage demonstrates real interest from policymakers in improving labor law, and evidence from a study of Canadian provinces that implemented similar laws suggests those changes increased unionization rates by 2 percentage points. In the United States, a 2 percentage point increase would boost private sector union density from nearly 6 percent to 8 percent, bringing the benefits of union membership to millions of workers.
