New York City newsboys, many so poor that they were sleeping in the streets, begin a two-week strike. Several rallies drew more than 5,000 newsboys, complete with charismatic speeches by strike leader Kid Blink, who was blind in one eye. The boys had to pay publishers up front for the newspapers; they were successful in forcing the publishers to buy back unsold papers.

Unions Sue to Block Thousands of Staffing Cuts at FEMA

Jan. 29, 2026 | JUSTICE | Unions representing U.S. government workers have asked a federal judge to block President Donald Trump's administration from cutting more than 10,000 jobs at the Federal Emergency Management Agency. The unions, in a filing in San Francisco federal court late Tuesday, said that job cuts at FEMA, which sends emergency personnel, supplies, and equipment to areas stricken by disasters, began last month and that the Trump administration has misled the public about their scope.
