Sailors aboard the S.S. California, docked in San Pedro, Calif., refuse to cast off the lines and allow the ship to sail until their wages are increased and overtime paid. The job action lasts three days before the secretary of labor intervenes and an agreement is reached. The leaders were fined two days’ pay, fired and blacklisted, although charges of mutiny were dropped. The action marked the beginnings of the National Maritime Union. ~ Labor Tribune

Starbucks Union Seeks National Template of US Bargaining
Updated On: Mar 61, 2024
Mar. 1, 2024 | COORDINATED BARGAINING | Starbucks union representatives want to create a national template for labor contract negotiations with the coffee chain, according to union organizers - an idea a Starbucks spokeswoman said the company believes is "speculative." The union, Workers United, has organized nearly 400 stores out of the company's 9,700 U.S. locations since 2021, and is seeking to organize more. Starbucks so far has sought to negotiate only individual contracts store-by-store. The union has argued this is a delaying tactic… Beyond Starbucks, a national bargaining process would mark a significant milestone for nascent efforts to organize the service sector. U.S. News  Why this matters: Teamsters Warehouse Division Director Tom Erickson has been a vocal proponent of coordinated bargaining.
